About
I am a physicist by training, but an artist by vocation. I have come to see scientists as ripe for Art, both as subject and audience. They have intense inner lives, but very few tools with which to tend them. They stake much of the worth of their souls on the fineness of their inner mechanisms and are expected to mend and nurture themselves with works never meant for them: with church music and Ewoks. The main purpose of this blog is to offer them more substantial fare. Hence the pseudonym: “Para” meaning “as good or better than” (as Paracelsus took his name to mean “At least as good as Celsus”) and “-Sagan” as in “Carl Sagan,” the greatest mythologist of Science in the current era, to whom I have some objections, or cautions.
However, since I am not being paid for this, it will be a place for any other long-ish form writing I want to post somewhere; not just pieces that try to live up to my outrageously arrogant pen name.
There’s going to be a bunch of K-pop/K-drama stuff too. Because that stuff is so fun it’s important.

The Saint

Abstract: I maintain that IU (née Lee Ji Eun i.e. 이지은) is a saint. I do this as a way of discussing what a saint is: someone who wills our happiness and goodness from a place of power.

Why It's All Possible
April 30th, 2026
Abstract: This is the start of a series on how art functions, both in an individual and in societies of various scales. What I want to dispatch first is the question of whether Art—a means of communicating deep, complicated, yet clarified distillations of specific experiences—is possible at all. The answer is, unsurprisingly, "yes." Because, as special as you are, so is everyone else.
